The Citations Drum & Bugle Corps of Burlington, MA are very excited to announce their 2009 program “Portraits of Desire”.
In contrast to the dark and ominous tones of last season’s “Sweeney Todd” based show, “Desire” –incorporates the passionate sounds and rhythms of Spanish influenced music. The corps is looking to continue momentum from last season as they rose up the competitive ladder, finishing in 6th place in the DCI Open Class World Championships in Bloomington, Indiana. This year’s edition of the corps will once again feature the 2008 Champion Color Guard with a program that highlights the various levels of desire - from “want” to “need” to “obsession”.
The first production features two pieces by the “Father of the Modern Tango” , Astor Piazolla. “Michelangelo 70” and “Libertango” include aggressive rhythms and seductive melodies as desire comes in the shape of a need or craving. Don McLean’s “Vincent” (as interpreted by Josh Groban) is expressed by the Van Gogh portrait “ Starry Night” and reflects the artist’s struggle for acceptance.
The colorful rhythms and ethnic sounds of Chick Corea’s “Day Danse” bring to life the seductive and passionate dances of Spain The program concludes with the tale of unrequited love in “ Nights in White Satin” - the expression of yearning as it takes control of a person in the form of obsession. Contemporary classical singer Mario Frangoulis’ version of provides the framework for music that resonates with passion. Taking a fresh approach to Moody Blues classic, the program weaves the dramatic moments of the original throughout.
